Storm Surge Animation --> (The animation for Hurricane Katrina Advisory #17 LSU is not available at this time. The file format of the animation is in the Audio Video Interleave (AVI) format. AVI is defined by Microsoft. The .avi file format is one of the very common formats for audio and video data on a computer.It is viewable using the avi players such as Microsoft Media Player. Please note:Surge levels are shown on each figure. Surge levels are indicated in meters above NGVD. When viewing the following images, remember to add the current water level to the surge estimate to determine the total water level. For example, if the model indicates 3 feet of surge, and the present water level at the site is 3 feet NGVD, then the total surge is going to be 6-7 feet above NGVD.
Run 1 - (South East Louisiana)If your PC does not easily open the animations with Quicktime, etc., please use the following procedure:
1. Download the Powerflic Application: You may download the application by clicking here. CREATE A NEW FOLDER on your desktop or other location (e.g., named “Storm Surge Animations” or “Powerflic” etc.) and SAVE Powerflic there. [You may be asked to “extract the files.” Press OK, and EXTRACT THE FILES to the same location (the new folder)].
2. Using INTERNET EXPLORER (Netscape is not recommended), return to this site (http://www.hurricane.lsu.edu/floodprediction/katrina17lsu/) using INTERNET EXPLORER: (Netscape does not work as well). Right click on each storm animation and choose “SAVE TARGET AS” and save each one to the new folder created above. You may wish to rename each animation (e.g., Betsy – So LA, etc.) to better identify each animation.
3. Open Powerflic: Click on POWERFLC or Powerflic.exe (looks like a clip of a movie reel)
4. Open the Animations: In Powerflic, a small tool bar/box will appear similar to Windows Media Player or other movie player. Click on the top left open folder (picture) to “Open” an animation. “Browse” for the folder where you saved each animation. Click on the animation you wish to view. Press the Green Arrow to “Play,” the red stop sign to “Stop” and the “X” at the right to close, etc. You may also adjust the picture and slow down the animation from this tool bar.
