Disaster Seminar Series

The LSU Hurricane Center has begun an interdisciplinary seminar series on hazards and disasters.
The features external invited speakers as well as LSU faculty and graduate students, examining
hazards and disasters from both scientific and emergency management perspectives. The seminar
meets weekly during the fall and spring semesters.

Seminar on Hurricane Debris and High Rise Buildings

Dr. Brian Lee will will present a seminar entitled "Vulnerability of Fully Glazed High Rise Buildings
in Tropical Cyclones" This seminar focuses on features of the built environment that are most likely
to be related to the damage causation in the event of a hurricane strike on a densely populated
suburban area (full abstract of presentation). Dr. Brian Lee is the Department Head and Balfour
Beatty Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Portsmouth.

Wind Engineering CPD Seminars in November

The LSU Hurricane Center is co-sponsoring several continuingprofessional

Continuing Professional Development for Engineers

The Baton Rouge Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers and
the LSU Hurricane Center are cosponsoring a Continuing Professional
Development seminar on Wind Effects on Structures.  Click here for
more information on the technical content of the seminar. The three-hour
seminar will be held on Thursday, September 20 from 1:00-4:00, immediately
following the monthly ASCE Luncheon.   The location is Ralph & Kacoo's
Restaurant at 6110 Bluebonnet Boulevard in Baton Rouge.  Seminar cost is $30.

Emergency and Hurricane Preparedness Expo

The Baton Rouge Project Impact team and the Baton Rouge Office of
Emergency Preparedness are sponsoring an emergency and preparedness
expo.  The expo will feature information on preparedness for
hurricanes, floods, fire, and chemical hazards. 
The LSU Hurricane Center will be an event cosponsor.

The expo will take place on Saturday, August 5,
 from 10:00 to 2:00 in Cortana Mall.

Meeting of TRB Subcommittee On Hurricane Evacuations

The first meeting on the formation of a TRB subcommittee on Hurricane
Evacuations will take place at the 80th Annual Transportation
Research Board Meeting.  The TRB meeting will be in Washington D.C.
during January 2001 (subcommittee meeting date, time and location
